Disease Surveillance

Fostering collaboration and comprehensive situational awareness in support of national and global health

Overview

Leidos offers public health surveillance solutions that help to improve the nation's ability to monitor disease trends. We deliver services ranging from the creation of mobile applications for real-time outbreak monitoring to the development of interoperable systems that support the reuse of clinical data.

Our team of public health informaticists, epidemiologists, and scientists support data collection and analysis. We design and integrate systems that capture health data indicators to assist in the detection of and response to public health threats. We apply our expertise in the development of standards-based, interoperable solutions to facilitate collaboration and the secure exchange of clinical data and disease tracking information among federal, state, and local public health stakeholders and between public health and healthcare organizations. Our services are used to improve access to health data, enable quicker assessment of population health indicators and arm public health officials with the information they need to develop appropriate intervention programs.

Mobile Infectious Disease Surveillance

The emergence of global infectious diseases such as the H1N1 influenza virus outbreak in 2009 underscored the need to deploy mobile surveillance tools to inform public health officials to facilitate appropriate, localized responses.

Leidos has developed a mobile infectious disease surveillance (MIDS) solution that facilitates reporting, tracking, and evaluation of infectious disease data. MIDS features an open source, collaborative environment that integrates information and supports data visualization from a variety of sources including social networks, news feeds and public health databases. MIDS enables Leidos to tailor a solution that enables real-time data collection, analysis, and visualization of any disease outbreak for better public health decision-making and situational awareness.

Healthcare-Acquired Infection (HAI) Surveillance

Nearly one in 20 hospitalized patients is predicted to contract a healthcare-acquired infection (HAI)*. Complications from HAIs can significantly extend or impede patient recovery, and may even be fatal. In response to the need for an intervention practice against the development of HAIs, Leidos works with epidemiologists and other public health scientists to provide the technical design and application development for a secure, Internet-based surveillance system that allows healthcare providers to collect and report data and analyze the effectiveness of HAI prevention initiatives.
